The back unexposed to the elements is much shinier than the front, but when I polish it a bit, it is brass. Great item for french apartment, shabby chic or cottage decor. It is in great condition apart from tarnish, and has the screws to hang it with as well.

It may have been painted black at some point, because there are some flecks of black in the crevices. Lovely ornate designs and engravings, this heavy piece weighs over five pounds. Measures about 14 long by across.

Old french poste letter holder post box I first thought this was cast iron, but it appears to be solid cast brass.
